Chasms in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom refer to deep crevices found in in the earth, scattered across Hyrule. Chasms serve as the primary entry points from the Hyrule surface into the Depths, a vast underground location that mirrors the world above in scale. The Depths present new challenges and opportunities for exploration in Link's latest adventure and Chasms allow him relatively easy entry into its mysterious caverns and mines. Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Chasms Overview
Chasms are easily distinguished by the telltale red and black liquid known as the Gloom oozing from their openings. Chasms are scattered across key locations throughout Hyrule and connect the Surface to the Depths, allowing Link entry into their corresponding regions. To enter the Depths, simply jump into a Chasm and accelerate, but be sure to slow your fall by gliding before you hit the bottom. Also, beware the Gloom-slicked walls of the Chasm and avoid touching them as you make your way down.
The Gloom is a dangerous substance that is prevalent throughout the Depths. Contact with this substance will slowly lock away Link's available Hearts, preventing him from healing until the condition is removed. While on the Surface, Gloom-locked Hearts will recover on their own but be careful when you begin exploring the Depths, as the affliction can only be cured by standing under Lightroots or consuming food cooked with Sundelion as an ingredient.
