Lightroots in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom are massive tree roots embedded from the Surface of Hyrule, down to the Depths where they can be seen. Where the Depths are normally very dark — with sunlight unable to reach its environments from the surface, Lightroots provide a source of light in their immediate area once activated, allowing for an easier time navigating the massive underground sections of the world. Activating a Lightroot uncovers parts of the map in the Depths, and they also serve to drive back the effects of the Gloom. There are a total of 120 Lightroots to be found in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and this page will cover their locations in detail.

Zelda: TotK Lightroot & Depths Exploration Overview
The Depths are a vast underground system located beneath Hyrule, made up of caverns, chasms and mines. This massive network is almost entirely in the dark at first, making it very difficult to traverse. However, scattered across the underground map are Lightroots — subterranean parts of trees whose main function is to bring light from the Surface down to the Depths, allowing Link to see much better down below.
Finding Lightroots in the Depths
Lightroots can easily be found by looking for the telltale faint orange glow given off by their cores.
Link can also utilize a variety of items and effects to temporarily illuminate the path towards a Lightroot in order to make navigating to it easier, as well as for exploring the depths in general. Some examples of illuminating effects include wielding Torches, throwing Brightbloom Seeds into the environment (or fusing them into arrows and firing) and cooking food or potions with Brightcap as an ingredient and then consuming them, among many, many other options.
Activating Lightroots
Lightroots can be activated simply by standing underneath the core and interacting with it. This causes the core and roots to glow, illuminating the immediate surrounding.
Activating a Lightroot will also reveal a portion of the Depths' map. Finding and activating Lightroots is the key to exploring the Depths.
Lightroots & Shrines of Light
Lightroots have a correlation with the Shrines of Light found on the surface of Hyrule. Each Lightroot is a direct mirror to each Shrine in terms of name and location. Lightroots and Shrine names are the exact same, but with the letters in reverse. For example, the Iayusus Lightroot has a corresponding Shrine on the surface called the Susuyai Shrine, and they share the exact same coordinates. This can help players with locating Lightroots by cross-referencing them with the Shrines they have already found and vice versa.
Much like Shrines of Light and Skyview Towers, Lightroots serve as Fast Travel Points once activated, allowing Link to quickly get to places previously visited in the Depths.
There are a total of 120 Lightroots to be found in the Depths, each one corresponding to the 120 Shrines found on the Surface. While there are 32 additional Shrines to be found in the Sky Islands, they do not correspond to any Lightroots in the Depths.
What do I get for finding and activating all Lightroots?
Finding all 120 Lightroots in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom awards the player with the Dispelling Darkness Medal, which is a simple trophy item that serves no real purpose other than as a symbol of completion and commemoration.
The real reward is having illuminated the entire Depths map, making it easier to find your way down below.
The Gloom
The Depths are filled with pools and rivers of a substance known as the Gloom. This dangerous red liquid has a malignant effect on the living and can negatively affect Link.
Stepping into the Gloom for too long will slowly lock away Link's available Hearts, making him unable to recover them, lowering his effective health pool until the condition is cleansed. Link can find and tame the skeletal Stalhorses that roam the Depths (and the surface), and ride them in order to traverse Gloom pools safely. Enemies and Creatures that lurk within the Depths are also Gloomtouched and will deal Gloom Damage to Link with their attacks, afflicting him with the same effect as the pools in the environment.
Note that the temporary Yellow Hearts that Link gains from consuming certain dishes will immediately be removed when he takes Gloom Damage.
Cleansing the Gloom
Link has a few options for ridding himself of the Gloom effect and returning his locked Hearts. The easiest way is to stand under an activated Lightroot for a short time.
Another option for cleansing the effects of the Gloom is to cook and consume food with Sundelion as an ingredient.
Such food will typically have "Sunny" as the prefix, such as the Sunny Mushroom Skewer. Sundelion grows in the sun at high altitudes and can be found quite commonly around the Sky Islands above Hyrule. It can be cooked on its own, or mixed with other ingredients to create more potent healing effects. Be sure to stock plenty when exploring the Depths!.
