Water Temple is a Temple in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom. The Water Temple is one of the four dungeons Link visits in the game as he goes through the Main Quest Regional Phenomena. Located in the Lanayru region, Sidon, the prince of the Zora, must brave the dangers of the temple with Link’s help, in order to root out the cause of the black sludge and purify the waters of Hyrule. They both must uncover the secrets of the source of Hyrule's waters, and Princess Zelda's attack on King Dorephan by clearing puzzles and enemies that lie within the temple.

How to Get to the Water Temple in Tears to the Kingdom

The Water Temple can be located above Wellspring Island, which floats high above the region of Lanayru. Wellspring Island itself is also a floating island, and as such both locations can only be reached by climbing waterfalls, first from Zora’s Domain. You will naturally learn how to do so during the Main Quest Sidon of the Zora. Throughout the following objectives, Sidon will be hearing a voice that only you two are able to hear. Eventually, your objective will be to restore the Zora Armor, which is what allows even Hylians to climb waterfalls, in order to get to the bottom of the mystery of the black sludge, seemingly brought about by Princess Zelda herself. Yona will be in charge of restoring this armor, however, she will need an Ancient Arowana to finish her restoration. If you don’t have one handy, you can catch one either in a fountain at the top of Ploymus Mountain, a step above Mipha Court, or at the bottom of a waterfall southwest of Great Sky Island. Once you bring one of the fish to Yona, she’ll give you your restored armor, completing the Restoring the Zora Armor Main Quest. Equip the armor and then head up the waterfall from Zora’s Domain to Wellspring Island, and then from Wellspring Island to the Water Temple later on.

Solving the Water Temple Puzzle in Zelda TotK

After climbing up the waterfall from Wellspring Island, you will see Sidon up ahead. Approach him for a cutscene. It seems that the source of the sludge is right in front of you, and on top of it are five large jars welded together, with faucets right over them. Only the middle faucet seems to be turned on, filling the middle jar with clean water. Examine the mechanism and the large jars of water will turn, pouring a large amount of water onto the sludge. As large of an amount as it was, it still wasn’t enough. The voice you and Sidon have been hearing then clearly communicates that you have to find a way to turn on the other five faucets, in order to clean the source of pure water for all of the people Zora.

Opening the First Faucet in the Water Temple

There are three Chuchus you can deal with here, which will drop useful materials to Fuse with if you’re running out of water-empowered ones. To start this puzzle off, head to the west edge of this platform. You should be able to see some stairs heading down to a lower floor, so jump off and get on them. They’ll lead down to the first basement floor, blocked off by a wall of fire. Use Sidon’s ability to put a shield of water around you to cross the fire. There should be a tile to your left that’ll turn off the fire, so deactivate one of the Hover Stones nearby and put it on top of the tile to let Sidon pass through as well. To your left will be a white wall with a slot in the middle, and to your right should be a grate. Follow the path to be greeted shortly by a large chasm. There’s a chest attached to a Hover Stone floating to your right. Hit it to deactivate it, then drop down and use Ultrahand to grab it for a Large Zonaite. Glide over the spikes to the other side to reach a white sphere that might be able to fit the slot on the white wall. Use the other Hover Stones to bring the sphere with you back across and then up to the white wall. The ball will not stay in the slot on its own so attach it to one of the Hover Stones and then slot it in, making sure the Hover Stone is activated. The grate behind you will slide away to reveal some gears inside. Use Sidon’s ability to hit them with a water slash and it’ll activate the first faucet.

Opening the Second Faucet in the Water Temple

Head back out and up the stairs. They’ll be broken at the end, but there should be an octagonal structure if you look to your right. Jump off and glide to one of the pond leaves floating there. There’s a chest underwater here that you can Ultrahand to get, containing a Sapphire. Look above you and there should be platforms that look broken apart. Ascend right up and jump and climb across to the large structure to the southwest, where three Soldier Construct IIIs will be waiting for you. Floating up near the south corner is a structure covered in black sludge. Hit it with an Arrow infused with any material with the power of water to wash the sludge off and you’ll let the waterfall behind it run its intended course. Jump and climb up this waterfall to a chest containing a Zora Shield. Head back down toward the large white sphere floating on the small pond. Like the previous puzzle, you’ll need to find the slot that this will fit into, which will probably reveal gears that can turn on another faucet. If you look at the map the nearest objective would be the higher platform to the north. To bring the sphere there, head to the east corner. There should be a cube-like structure jutting from the ground covered in black sludge. Use any water-empowered hit to wash it off and it’ll start to shoot bubbles that float up right to where you want to go. Hold the sphere in front of it until it makes a bubble, and then jump into the next bubble it makes for a free ride up. Up here there is a Chuchu and you’ll see the large slot made for the sphere under water but the sphere won’t stay slotted because the water will make it float. Conveniently, the floodgate to control the water is right in front of the pond. Grab the Hover Stone at the other end and attach it to the slot on top of the floodgate. Make sure it’s activated and then pull it up with Ultrahand to drain the water. Now you can put the sphere in its intended slot, which will let the grate on the nearby structure slide down. Hit the gears inside with Sidon’s ability to activate the second faucet.

Opening the Third Faucet in the Water Temple

From here, you can either fast-travel back to the Water Temple Entrance or head to the east to jump and glide down to the first area. There will either be a Captain Construct II now waiting in the middle of the platform or two Soldier Construct IIIs on opposite ends. On the north side, right beside a stagnant bubble, there’s a Strong Zonaite Spear to the left. To the right of the bubble, there’s a black sludge on the structure above. Wash it off and climb up the waterfall it reveals. Up here, wash off the black sludge on the floor in front of you for a chest containing five Arrows. To your right will be a Fire Like that’ll be blowing fireballs at you. Kill it for a chest containing a Strong Zonaite Sword. Back towards the first chest, you can jump across and see a bubble on the third small platform across. The bubble will pop on its own eventually, after floating down from above. Jump in and then hit Recall on it to bring you back up along with the bubble. The structure containing the gears for the faucet here seems to be connected with the yellow lines to the structures to its right, all the way to what seems like a water wheel that isn’t moving because the little waterfall can’t reach it. In the pond under the wheel, there should be two boards you can attach to different points of the wheel so that the waterfall can turn it. The yellow line will light up with the power flowing to the left. Following the line back to the grated structure, there seems to be a gap preventing the power from getting to it. Use Ultrahand on the nearby bubble and place it on the gap to connect the lines. The grate should now slide down and you can use Sidon’s ability on the gears to turn on the third faucet.

Opening the Fourth Faucet in the Water Temple

From here, follow the last objective to the southeast. At the end of the platform there should be another bubble maker on the floor, so you can ride a bubble straight up and then glide to the next area. Alternatively, you can head back to the platform where the Fire Like was, head southeast toward the objective, Ascend up at the end of the platform, and then jump and climb to the next. This area has three Chuchus and two Soldier Construct IIs, one with flaming arrows and one with ice arrows. To the south, there will be a tower with its top rapidly rotating. There’s actually a small pillar inside that you have to hit in order to lower the grate for the last set of gears. Near the tower is a large block that you can climb. You could also get even higher up using the nearby Hover Stones, but the large block should be enough. You can choose to try your luck shoot some arrows toward the middle of the moving structure, but the easier way would be to simply jump and aim to activate the slow-motion window. After hitting the pillar successfully, the water level will decline, and the grate on the structure below you to the right will lower. Before heading to lower ground, turn toward the northeast corner and you should see a small floating platform with a chest. Use the Hover Stones if you aren’t high enough, then jump and glide to it to grab the Large Zonai Charge it contains. Head down to where the water has lowered, and there should be a chest to the northwest containing an Opal. Finally, go to the newly-revealed gears and hid it with Sidon’s ability to turn on the fourth and final faucet.

How to Beat the Boss in the Water Temple in Zelda TotK

Jump off the platform to the west, or fast-travel back to the entrance now and activate the mechanism to pour all five of the large jars, with all five faucets now activated, onto the source of the black sludge. Everything will finally be cleaned off, apart from a puddle that separates from the source. The Mucktorock will appear from it revealing itself to be the source of all the Zora’s woes and initiating the boss fight for this temple. The Mucktorock will keep itself in a sludge shark it creates as armor to keep itself safe, so use your water-empowered weapons and arrows, and Sidon’s ability, to wash its sludge cosplay off. While still in it though, it will either launch up and drop creating sludge waves spreading out from the impact, or shoot sludge beams at you. While these can hit hard, the lowered gravity should allow you to jump over them easily if you time it right. The shark armor should disperse with just one successful water hit though, making the Mucktorock run away for its life. Another hit will cause the boss to keel over unable to move for a time, allowing you to rush in and deal as much damage as possible. When its health drops to half it’ll shoot out several sludge puddles on the floor before once again assuming shark form. The same strategy still applies, only this time you should exert some extra effort to wash out the puddles as you’re trying to hit the shark. This is because in this second phase, after successfully removing the shark armor, the Mucktorock will swiftly jump from puddle to puddle, making it quite difficult for you to land a hit. Another possible tactic would be to use homing arrows whenever the Mucktorock rears its slimy head, to swiftly make it collapse and allow you to rush in with your full might. Finally defeating it will reward you with a Heart Container, and a tear-shaped object will float down in front of the water mechanism. Approach Sidon to initiate a cutscene, revealing more information about the Imprisoning War, from the voice that’s been calling out to Sidon all this time. Afterward, Sidon will bless you with his ring, the Vow of Sidon, Sage of Water, so you’ll be able to call upon his both defensive and offensive water power whenever you need it. Congratulations!

Speed Run Walkthrough

After restoring the Zora Armor with Yona’s help, and by acquiring an Ancient Arowana, you will gain the ability to climb up waterfalls by simply equipping the armor. Climb up the waterfall in Zora’s Domain to get to Wellspring Island, and after clearing the island, climb up the waterfall there to get to the Water Temple. Examine the mechanism in front of you to move forward with your new objectives - find a way to turn on the four remaining faucets to ultimately pour enough water from the large jars into the source of the black sludge to purify all the water again. Head to the northwest edge of this platform to a slightly raised ledge to the left of the stairs, marked with what looks like a blue arrow. Jump off to the ledge and glide down toward the wall of flames. Use Sidon’s ability to go through them. Once inside, make sure to deactivate the Hover Stone nearby and place it on the raised tile to the right of the firewall to let Sidon pass through. Head along the path inside to get to a large gap with spikes at the bottom. There’s a chest floating above you to the right with a Large Zonaite if you want it. Otherwise, glide over the spikes to the other side. Attach the white sphere here to the Hover Stone floating over the gap and then glide back across. Bring the combined item over to you first and then head back up first before pulling it up and then slotting the sphere into the indent on the white wall to your right. Make sure the Hover Stone is activated or it will just fall. Some gears will be revealed behind you, which you can hit using Sidon’s ability to turn on the first faucet.

Head back out and up the stairs and then glide to an octagonal structure with a pond to your right. There’s a chest underwater here containing a Sapphire if you want it. Otherwise, Ascend up to the structure above you and move forward to the next large structure. In front of you will be an embedded cube covered in black sludge. Clear out the sludge, grab the sphere floating on the pond to your left, and then hold it up in front of the glowing side of the cube to let a bubble bring it to the next platform. Follow it by jumping on the next bubble. Grab the sphere and let it float right on top of the white structure underwater. To the right are some pillars and two Hover Stones just a bit further. Attach an activated Hover Stone to the slot in between the pillars, and then use Ultrahand to pull the whole thing up to drain the water and let the sphere fall into the white structure. Across it will be the next set of gears you need to hit with Sidon’s ability to turn on the second faucet.

Jump off to the west to the initial area, and keep running to the other end. To the right of the stagnant bubble, hit the black sludge on the structure above with a water-infused arrow, and then climb up the waterfall it reveals. Climb up to the next rectangular platform, where there’re five Arrows in a chest covered in black sludge on the floor if you want it. Jump forward and into the bubble in front of you and then use Recall on it to rise up to the next area. Head to the right and grab some boards in the pond and attach it to different points on the water wheel to let the waterfall move it. There should be a bubble hiding behind the structure to the left, so use Ultrahand to grab it and place it on the gap between this structure and the leftmost structure. Hit the newly-revealed set of gears with Sidon’s ability to turn on the third faucet.

Glide back down to the rectangular platform, heading northeast. There’s a Fire Like at the end of the platform here that drops a chest containing a Strong Zonaite Sword if you want to get it. Otherwise, glide straight past it and continue on to the next large platform. Run straight to the south end to find a tower with a rapidly rotating head. Climb onto the stone block beside it, and then jump and aim at the tower to hit a pillar inside the moving head. This reveals the last set of gears, so go to them and hit them with Sidon’s ability to finally turn on the fourth and final faucet.

To the north under the ledge, there’s a chest containing an Opal if you want it. Otherwise, head straight to the west and jump back to the initial area and activate the mechanism to eventually cause the Mucktorock to appear. The Mucktorock mainly fights while riding a sludge shark it creates, by either causing a sludge wave or shooting a sludge beam. The strategy here is to hit the sludge shark with Sidon’s ability, or any water-infused weapon, just once to wash it off, hit the exposed Mucktorock once to stun him, and then dish out as much damage as possible while it’s disabled. At half health, he’ll cover the field with several sludge puddles. In addition to hitting the sludge shark with water, make sure to wash off as many of the puddles as you can, as the Mucktorock will use them to dodge your attacks once exposed. During this phase, you can hit the Mucktorock once with a homing arrow right after washing the sludge shark off if you want, to ensure the stun. Eventually, the monster will fall, rewarding you with some more cutscenes, and great boons for your adventure.
