Tears of the Kingdom

Princess Zelda is an NPC in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Princess Zelda is a staple in the Zelda series, having the titles named after her. Princess Zelda has always played a large part in the Zelda series, with the latest being Tears of the Kingdom. Princess Zelda makes an appearance in the early release trailers of the game. She is a member of the Hyrule royal family. Link was initially Zelda's knight, but there are implications that Princess Zelda had shared some romantic feelings toward Link. In the previous title, Breath of the Wild, Princess Zelda is mostly heard as a voice and only appearance primarily through memory flashbacks throughout the game. She is expected to play a larger role in the current sequel Tears of the Kingdom since her return. NPCs are non-playable characters that give life to the world of Hyrule. Some NPCs play an important role in the game's story and often provide the player with vital information and resources that will help in gameplay.

I know why I am here. It's something only I can do... Link,  you are our final hope. You must find me.

Princess Zelda in Tears of the Kingdom

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will pick up where Breath of the Wild ended as the direct sequel to the game, introducing more locations, mechanics, and abilities. Since Zelda's return at the end of Breath of the Wild, Princess Zelda is expected to play a larger role in Tears of the Kingdom.

From the early trailers, Zelda's voice can be heard calling out to Link and asking him to find her. She is also featured holding the Master Sword herself in one of the trailer scenes.

Princess Zelda Information

Princess Zelda is the Hylian Princess of Hyrule and a central character seen throughout The Legend of Zelda series. She was first introduced in the 1986 game and continues to appear in subsequent releases in the Legend of Zelda series. She represents the different incarnations and descendants of the Goddess Hylia. Zelda is the name given to females born in Hyrules, bearing the same responsibilities. In most of the titles, the story goes the same way with Ganon making a return which is where Link plays a role in saving Princess Zelda and all of Hyrule from Ganon. She generally plays a passive role in most games, with Link playing the protagonist, but is sometimes given more dynamic parts in some titles featuring her sacred powers.

In the most recent addition to the series, Breath of the Wild, Zelda plays a passive role since the setting takes place 100 years after her active time. The Lore and prophecy, however, are centered around how Princess Zelda had previously managed to seal away Ganon and how she gathered a set of Champions to man the Divine Beasts that were unearthed and were destined to keep Ganon and the malice at bay. Zelda had sacrificed herself in order to keep Ganon at Hyrule castle to give Link a chance to fulfill the prophecy and seal away Ganon once again. Zelda's voice is then the first one that you hear in the game as Link wakes up in the Shrine of Resurrection. Throughout the game, Zelda's voice can be heard guiding Link to gain as much help as he can get, to obtain the Master Sword in order to eventually face Ganon again at the Hyrule castle while she contains Calamity Ganon there. Zelda's father also makes an appearance in Breath of the Wild as an early-game NPC, providing Link with his glider.

Breath of the Wild ends similarly to others in the franchise, with Link defeating Ganon. After his defeat, Zelda is then free to emerge again after 100 years. Zelda then once more seals Calamity Ganon and Hyrule can be at peace once again, which sets the preface for the sequel, Tears of the Kingdom.

Throughout the many titles she has appeared in, she has many different variants and evolutions that reflect the evolutions of the games and graphics themselves. Reincarnations of her appear in different games so she appears with varying costumes, looks, and slightly varying personalities with a few iconic features that players recognize. Other Variants of Zelda include her with a harp as a goddess in Skyward Sword or her a male Sheikah named Sheik when she disguises herself for a majority of the duration of Ocarina of Time. Sheik also carries a harp used to teach link Warping songs. This is one of his key features before he reveals himself to be Princess Zelda.

Princess Zelda Powers

Lore states that Princess Zelda had inherited a sacred power since she carries the blood of the Goddess Hylia as her descendant. Her power was bestowed so that she may continuously have the ability to seal Ganon away and adequately rule Hyrule while keeping the peace. These same powers allow her to heal, conjure weapons, use telepathy to guide and assist Link, formulate different methods of attacks, and defenses, and carry the power to protect Hyrule as a whole. "Much like Link, she is living a normal existence at the Knight Academy when she awakes to the destiny set in motion for her by the goddess. Joined by Impa on the surface world, they do what they must to ensure the safety of the land." -The Legend Of Zelda Hyrule Historia power age of calamity princess zelda legend of zelda tears of the kingdom wiki guide 300 min

Throughout some of the games, her voice can be heard through Link's perspective as she acts as his guiding spirit. Her father expresses that her power can run out which is why Link needed t to quickly defeat Ganon while she still had the power to seal him away and contain him. More of her great power in Combat can be seen in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity when she awakens her True Power and manages to clear the area of the Guardians as she calls out to Link as she saves him.

Some games depict Zelda as a goddess shown with a Harp such as in Skyward Sword. Her Harp has some similarities as seen as a variatm Sheik in Ocarina of Time. Sheik is known as Zelda in disguise for a majority of Ocarina of Time.  And the other, who holds the Triforce of Wisdom… is the seventh Sage, who is destined to be the leader of them all… it is I, the Princess of Hyrule, Zelda. I apologize for meeting you in disguise, but it was necessary to hide from the king of evil. Please forgive me… -Zelda as Sheik

Princess Zelda Personality

Zelda is usually portrayed as a noble and wise Princess full of grace and passion for her Kingdom. She's been known to make great sacrifices for the good of the land. Evidence of her sacrifice includes her great act of sacrifice as she sacrifices herself in order to save Midna in Twilight Princess since she had the sole ability to heal her after Midna had been exposed to the light world. She also displays valiant Bravery as seen in Breath of the Wild when she defiantly chooses to face Ganon alone despite the fall of her knight, Link, and her fellow champions. This resulted in her entrapment as she uses what was left of her powers to contain Calamity Ganon at the time. She continues to uphold her values and responsibilities despite being a young princess, she has the wisdom beyond her years to rule the Kingdom. Her noble attributes of selflessness, wisdom, bravery, and compassion are what lead her incarnates to continue to be chosen by destiny to be the keeper of the Triforce of Wisdom. Such characteristics make her worthy of her title and clear to see why she adds a great dynamic personality as one of the main characters in The Legend of Zelda franchise.

Princess Zelda Character Appearances

Overall Appearance

Depending on the game title she is featured in, her character has slight variations to her overall look and attire. Much like other characters like Link, Zelda undergoes character changes that evolve according to the evolution of the games, systems, and graphic styles. From 8bit to 2d and 3d designs, these changes are also reflected in her features and character design and the overall graphic style of each title. Each title also features a different variant of Zelda.  Her age also varies and ranges from her more mature roles to when she is depicted as a younger child. Despite all the evolutions, her typical iconic look remains prominent. This includes her long blond hair, her elf-like pointed Hylian ears, pale skin, slender figure, and different shades of blue for her eyes. Other variations to her look feature Zelda with a different hair color including brown and even red. This is seen in Four Swords, Twilight Princess, and her red hair can be seen in The Legend of Zelda and The Adventure of Link. Her most recent appearance continues to feature her iconic blond hair in braids but is cropped short for the duration of Tears of the Kingdom.

Wardrobe

Her general look portrays her as an elegant figure and full of grace, later games depict her as a warrior herself with a wardrobe displaying similar characteristics to that of Link. Most other times, she is seen in an elegant long dress to fit the royal role and her place in the castle. This sometimes features the royal crest. She has been seen typically wearing shades of pink, white, and blue and is complemented by a set of jewels and the iconic Hylian crown or tiara. Sometimes she can also be seen wearing a set of white long gloves. Some of her wardrobe variations are seen on her Amiibos, so this also further expands Princess Zelda's available outfits. She has access to a number of different colors of dresses, skirts tops, hairstyles, and accessories that range in different colors from pink, peach, maroon, white, cream, purple, and gold.

Her basic outfits featured in Breath of the Wild also tend to change from time to time depending on the cutscene, time period, and terrain of the featured scene. Unlike most other games, her most prominent color in this title was blue. The color blue and white was featured on her royal gown as well as her action warrior outfit. She continues to sport this bright blue action outfit in the game's sequel Tears of the Kingdom. Throughout the different games, her shoes also range in different styles including sandals, heels, and boots.

Age

As the main character of the Zelda series, yet in a passive role, Zelda appears in different games at different stages in her life. She is typically depicted as a mid-teenager majority of the time, but as of Breath of the Wild, she manages to hold down Ganon until Link's awakening 100 years later so that would put her at around 115-120 years old. Her most mature depiction appears in the game, Twilight Princess putting Zelda in her 20s.
