Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Upgrades

Armor Upgrades
Weapon Upgrades

To unlock the armor upgrade in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, you will need the location of the Great Fairies. These fairies will enhance armor in exchange for Rupees and certain upgrade materials. Before they can start upgrading your armor, you'll need the help of a group of musicians to serenade them, and eventually, get them to come out of their flowers. One must note as well that, each time you unlock a Great Fairy, all of them become better at enhancing your armor. This means that, if you want to reach the highest enhancement available, you must unlock all 4 of the Great Fairies so all levels of enhancement will be unlocked. Whenever you upgrade your armor, the defensive rating of the armor will improve, as well as other special benefits that will boost Link's stats. We'll cover all the locations of each of the 4 fairies, how to get their side quests, and how armor upgrades work.

Use our Interactive Map to check out the locations of the Great Fairies and to see it in higher resolution.

All the Four Great Fairies' locations are marked on the map above, and while the important thing here is to go to the first fairy labeled as number 1, the rest of the fairies don't really follow a sequence. You can just go to each of the fairies' locations depending on which one is more accessible for you. These locations are also near Stables, where you would pick up the side quest from. Use the map above, or you may also click the image to go to the Interactive Map and help you navigate better.

  1. Great Fairy Tera (Woodland Stable)
  2. Great Fairy Kaysa (Outskirt Stable)
  3. Great Fairy Mija (Snowfield Stable)
  4. Great Fairy Cotera (Dueling Peaks Stable)

To get the great fairies to leave their respective flowers, you'll need to do a side quest for each of them. These quests can be started from their corresponding stables listed above, where you'll interact with the musical group called "Stable Trotters." They are the ones responsible to serenade the great fairies, and Link's task is usually to reunite a missing band member so they can perform together with their group. To begin unlocking these Great Fairies, you must first begin with Great Fairy Tera. In order to unlock her quest, you need to visit Lucky Clover Gazette HQ and get the Potential Princess Sightings side quest. You don't need to complete the quest right away. All you need is to get the quest from the NPC. Then, the initial questline with Great Fairy Tera will now be available once you visit the Woodland Stable, so make sure to visit the HQ first.

How to Upgrade Armor Guide in Zelda: TotK

Once you have completed Serenade to a Great Fairy (Tera), you can now use the Great Fairy Fountain to upgrade your armor. Visit a great fairy in her fountain, and you'll need to pay a rupee and have the corresponding material needed. In the menu, you will see all the armor pieces that you own (helms, chest armor, and leg armor.) You will notice that some armors are highlighted, and the others appear to be greyed out (refer to the second image.) This means that the latter is unavailable for an upgrade, it's either you don't have the materials/rupees for the upgrade or the armor is simply not available for upgrades. Take note that the fee for an upgrade goes higher as the level of enhancement goes up. In the scenario below, we want to upgrade the armor Hyliad Hood for 10 Rupees and 5 Bokoblin horns. So this will be the cost/material needed for this upgrade. All you have to do next is to click on 'Enhance Away' if you're ready for the armor upgrade or 'No thanks.' if you want to cancel. In the 3rd image, you will see the upgrade effect on your armor. You can see here that the base defense stat of the Hylian Hood is increased from 3 to 5.

In the first image below, you will see the Hylian Tunic is greyed out. While we do have enough Rupees for the upgrade, we don't have the materials needed for this upgrade. In this case, the Bokoblin horns. The material list will appear in red text, and there will be no choices given if you want to enhance it or not. After your very first upgrade or interaction with Tera, she informs Link that there are a total of 4 Great Fairies in the Hyrule Kingdom. Then, she will mark the locations of the other Great Fairy Fountains on your map.

Upgrading Hylian Hood to ★★ 2 Star

There are 2 benefits to armor upgrades in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

  • The base defense stats are increased and
  • Set Upgrades Bonuses

Whenever you enhance your armor, its defense stats are increased. In the scenario to the left, you will see in the description that the armor will be increased from 3 -> 5 if you upgrade the Hylian Hood. In the next image, we also upgraded the same armor to ★★ 2 Star, the base defense is increased to 8 and the cost for this is 50 Rupees, 5x Blue Bokoblin Horn, and 3x Bokoblin Fang.

The cost for armor upgrades starts from ★ 1 Star - 10 Rupees up to ★★★★ 4 Star - 500 Rupees. This cost is the same for all the armor upgrades, but the difference will be the material needed per item, just like in the example Hylian Hood upgrade. As for the set upgrades, some of the armor sets in Zelda has a bonus that activates when each of the armor pieces is upgraded to ★★ 2 Star. If you want the armor set bonus to activate, make sure to unlock at least two Great Fairies. Some set bonuses give increased attack, higher resistance to elements, and speed increases. Check out the list of all armor sets here and their bonuses.

What happens if you unlock all 4 Great Fairies in Zelda?

four great fairies zelda tears of the kingdom wiki guide min

Unlocking the first fairy will give you one upgrade level for all upgradeable armor pieces that you have... but what happens if you unlock all 4 Great Fairies? If you unlock all 4, this means you can enhance the armor up to 4 times once you have found all of them. It doesn't matter which fairy you will be visiting, they all share the same level of enhancement available to them. They also share the same cost and use the same materials for upgrading. Keep in mind that the number of fairies unlocked caps the maximum level of enhancement that you can get. This means that, if you want to get the max level of enhancement for your armor, it's a must to get all of the Great Fairies.

Unlock All Armor Upgrades in Zelda: TotK

Now that we have talked about unlocking all 4 fairies, now is the time that you might be wondering: "Can I upgrade all of my armor to ★★★★ 4 Star?" The answer is no. While it's true that getting all 4 of them will give you the maximum level of enhancement allowed, there are certain armor sets in the game that is not available for upgrades. For example: the Phantom Set which includes the armor, greaves, and helmet. This specific set does not allow any level of upgrades, however, equipping all 3 of them will give Link a special effect of Attack Up.

This set is considered to be one of the best armor that you can get in-game because of the effect and yes, the armor looks super cool! The armor pieces are scattered, but they are definitely worth getting. Since we mentioned that there are no upgrades allowed for this armor, this means that you won't be spending any rupees to make this armor better!

So if you are wondering why some of your pieces are greyed out in the Upgrades Menu, your game is not bugged, it's just the way it is! There are just some sets that do not allow any upgrade on the parts of the armor. Though we are sure that many of the players will still surely pick up this set, even without the upgrades!

How to Farm Rupees for Armor Upgrade

If you are wondering, Rupees are the main currency in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.  It is ideal to spend your rupees on materials, armor upgrades, and other important resources.  We recommend selling ores, hunting animals, selling cooked meat, and defeating Stone Talus (a field boss.) We have a few ways to make more rupees that we will list below to help you get set with your adventures.

Defeat Stone Talus to get Ores for Rupees

As we mentioned above, one of the best ways to farm rupees is to sell ores, and what better way to get ores if you can farm it when you defeat a mini-boss like Stone Talus? Stone Talus is a pebblit type of creature albeit a huge one. It is the rare version of the smaller creatures and drops a hefty amount of ores. It can drop various types of Ores listed below:

The Stone Talus respawns every 7 days or every time the Blood Moon appears. If you have been playing the game for a while, you might have seen your surroundings turn crimson red. This is one of the good reasons to farm this mini-boss, and can make you a good amount of rupees before you know it.

Mining Ore Deposits in Zelda TotK

You can get more ores by exploring caves and destroying ore deposits that you find. There are various types of ores that can be found throughout Link's adventures.

Just like what we mentioned above, selling ores is one of the best ways to earn rupees in the game. Of course, aside from hunting the Stone Talus every 7 days (in-game), you can always farm ores by mining deposits. You can get ores in caves and if you're done with the main quest: Yunobo of Goron City, you can get a skill that allows you to break rocks which will be helpful when farming ores. Each of the ores sells for a different price, you can check the table above to compare. Check out the locations of the caves here.

Hunting Animals and Selling Cooked Meals

Link can cook meals in any of the cooking pots found in the world.

During your journey in the Hyrule Kingdom, you might have come across wild animals. If you hunt these animals, you can cook their meat and sell it to any vendor! They are definitely easy to find, and they are scattered all over the kingdom. One of the other ways to get cooked meals is to do side adventures, some NPCs like to reward Link by giving him free meals. If you're not going to use these meals, you can go ahead and sell them! Some cooked meals can go from 30 rupees and more. You can check out the list of recipes here.

There are also new features added to cooking: Recipe Book and Cook Books. Check out all the cool new features of Cooking here.

Read this guide on how to Upgrade your Weapons in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom. One of the in-game mechanics that have been introduced in Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the Weapons' durability. Whenever you hit monsters, it consumes a portion of the weapons' durability. When it reaches zero, this breaks the item and will make it unusable. This is why you always have to be mindful that Weapons and Shields have enough durability to last in combat or have a selection of weapons to switch to. Today, Zelda: TotK has introduced a new feature that will help all players to restore their weapons and shields' durability, and let you keep your favorite weapons longer.

How to Upgrade Weapons in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

rock octorok monsters zeldatotk wiki guide 300px

To upgrade your weapons in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, you must first look for a Rock Octorok. These creatures are scattered in the Kingdom of Hyrule, and they can help Link by repairing weapons & shields. This allows for restoring their durability to make the weapons last longer. One thing to note: they aren't exactly super friendly, however, they are also not that very powerful. So, dealing with them should be easy. A Rock Octorok can be identified with a chunk of rock that sits on top of its head and they like to stay burrowed. This creates the perfect camouflage in their surroundings, making them easy to miss. Below, we'll tell you Where to Find Octoroks and How Weapons Upgrade Work in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

How Do Weapons Upgrade Work in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom?

Rock Octoroks are creatures originally from Zelda: BotW, but with their return in the new Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, they have been given a fresh, new ability that players will surely enjoy. To take advantage of their new ability, first, you need to get close to it without getting blown away by its attacks. They can be aggressive once they come out of their burrows, so be wary of the rocks that they're throwing. Next, once you're close to the Octorok, drop the weapon you want to be repaired in front of it, then move to a safe position where you can still see the Octorok. Soon enough, it will open up its mouth and do a vacuuming motion, sucking in the weapon that you dropped.

After the Octorok vacuums in the weapon, it will start to glow and give off an explosion of sparkles and clouds. This indicates that the repair is complete. Shortly after, it will throw out the weapon that you dropped in your direction. Once you pick it up, you can check it in your inventory, and you will find that your item is now sparkly brand new with a new modifier changed to it.

The weapon modifier is always random, every time an Octorok swallows your weapons. So if you're looking for a specific modifier, you will have to keep using the Octorok to upgrade your weapon until you have your preferred modifier. Another thing to note, the modifier will always improve the existing one, so you will never have your weapon effects downgraded. The same thing applies to all other Equipment that you want to be upgraded.

Where to Find Rock Octoroks in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom?

The Rock Octorok is a member of the Octoroks Family that lives in volcanic regions. You will mostly find them in these locations:

Can I upgrade all of my Weapons & Shields in Zelda: TotK?

The Rock Octorok shows us that it's super strong and can suck in anything in its frontal direction. You can also comfortably rely on it to repair your weapon's durability and give it an upgrade every time you offer up your weapon to it. However, this strong creature also has its limitations:

  • The Octorok can only do one weapon every Blood Moon, or that's equal to 7 days in-game.
  • The Rock Octorok cannot repair Legendary Weapons.

If you drop a Legendary Weapon in front of it, it will still vacuum in the weapon, but the Octorok will not give out a glow, or any kind of sparkles and explosion. Note that this is the indicator of the repair being complete. It will just throw the weapon in your direction without doing any repairs or upgrades to it.

You CAN repair legendary weapons. Simply fuse the legendary weapon to a weapon that can be repaired and complete the normal process of repairing and upgrading the weapon. Next, bring the fused weapon to Tarrey Town in the Akkala region and pay Pelison to unfuse the repaired weapon. Boom. Infinite legendary weapons :)
