How to find Recipes and Cookbooks in TOTK
Recipes in the game are not physical items but instead are learned through cooking. Recipes can sometimes be learned by speaking to different NPC, locating notes, reading books, or paying extra attention to posters on the walls. They sometimes have hints on how to create specific dishes. This would require you to remember the contents of these notes and posters. Previously in Breath of the Wild, dish recipes could also be seen on the walls inside of Stables as posters. For the best results, it's best to refer to the discovered recipes to gain the desired effects of your product. The game values trial and error, so without a guide, players are encouraged to experiment with different dishes and ingredients. For known recipes refer to the recipe guide below. The page will update as recipes are discovered in the game.
How to get Cooking Materials TOTK
Materials for cooking are usually foraged, hunted for, or purchased from various general stores encountered throughout the map. Most common meats that are easily obtainable are any sort of vegetation or fruit that can be picked up from the grounds, bushes, or trees or obtained from killing wildlife such as boar. Link can also obtain fish from any nearby bodies of water just by getting close enough for the take action to appear. these materials can then be combined to create food. For guides on how to get specific Materials, refer to the Materials guide page.
How to get Elixir Materials TOTK?
Aside from cooking, Materials are used to create Elixirs that can provide temporary stat boosts or resistances for a short duration of time that is specified on the created Elixir. Typical Elixirs are made from bugs or Monster Parts which are obtained from enemy and monster combat. Face different monsters and they will have different monster parts that they drop. Other materials can be purchased from different merchants or vendors that are encountered throughout the map.
How do you make Elixirs and Food in TOTK?
Elixirs are made the same way food is made. Locate a nearby cooking pot or use a portable cooking pot. You will need to have gathered the necessary Materials and ingredients for your Elixir. The amount of materials will also determine and affect the potency, effects, and duration of the product. Approach any lit cooking pot. If the pot is not lit, you can light it with any fire source or fire weapon. You will then have the option to cook. With this option available, you can now bring up your materials inventory. Select the materials you want to add to your pot by holding them. Some materials will have the option to directly eat the materials as is; make sure you do not accidentally select this option since this is the first one. You can hold a maximum of 5 materials. Once you are holding all your desired materials, exit the menu and approach the pot and select cook to combine the materials, and create a dish or elixir.
Other Methods of Cooking
Aside from the conventional cooking pot, there are other unique ways to prepare materials that will affect its bonus stats and consumption. On icy terrain, players can leave out meat products and Materials on the snowy ground for a short period in order to create Icy or frozen products. Examples of this include Frozen Bird Drumstick, Frozen Bird Thigh, Icy Gourmet Meat, and Icy Prime Meat. Icy products would then usually grant a level of temporary heat resistance. In an opposite biome where the terrain is intensely hot, players can similarly place meat products on the hot ground to create seared or roasted products. Leaving items on the burning ground for too long, however, may result in burning the food, so it's best to collect it as it sears before it further burns.
Dubious Items in TOTK
Much like Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom gives players the freedom to experiment with different Materials without a set recipe. Mixing random Materials may reap dubious results. Link will find it gross, but even Dubious Food will have the ability to restore some of Link's hearts.
